In reprinting this story for a new edition, I have only to express my regret that it was not written more carefully ; and my pleasure at perceiving that its chaff has not altogether hidden from view the few grains of true and tender wheat which it may contain . One of its motifs — that of the man who has lost his beloved through a trifling act or word which he would give the world to recall—is a truth of human life which has perhaps not yet had its full say in literature , though it occurs frequently enough in experience.
