Materials show a great change in their properties when particle size is continuously reduced and reaches below 100 nm. The study of characteristics of materials in the nanoregime (1 to 100 nm) is governed mostly by the principles of quantum mechanics. The exceptional properties shown by nanomaterials have great promise for future technological developments and are responsible for the evolution and growth of nanotechnology. The scientific principle to which nanotechnology owes its existence forms the field of Nanoscience. The field of nanotechnology which is concerned with the applications of Nanoscience, is one of the most exciting and interesting areas for people from physics, chemistry, biology, and engineering backgrounds. An introductory course in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology is being taught for undergraduate, honours and postgraduate students of physics in various Indian Universities and also for graduate students of engineering.
