The active interest of recent years in the study of laser related subjects in various academic institutions has resulted in a much more complete understanding of the properties of laser and devices of significant practical importance. A student may well be stimulated by many review articles on lasers and yet remain dissatisfied with them since in these the material in necessarily presented in such a way that the degree of understanding they provide the reader is severely curtailed. It may, therefore, be of sufficient value to him to find a book such as this, in which the necessary basic physical theories are presented. The chief objectives in preparing this new edition have been revision of existing texts. Few new topics are added and each chapter is
